aprender en publico

EN CONSTRUCCIÓN Este fue mi primer post en Substack el 29 de enero de 2025, ahora lo estoy editando y traduciendo activamente en esta página. Ve el original aquí.

I’ve always loved two things: gaming and learning.

For me, playing video games has always been a social activity—a way to keep up with friends and have a great time. Learning, on the other hand, was mostly a solo experience. I read books, studied flashcards, and attended lectures, all focused on my own understanding. But the few times I shared learning with friends were incredibly rewarding. Teaching them a subject, sitting together over coffee while working on a college project, having them correct me when I was wrong, and celebrating their successes—those moments were far more enjoyable than learning alone. This contrast between these two things made me realize something important about how we learn best.

We, as humans, are social creatures—we all know that. But often, we need to be reminded more than taught. And right now, the world is revolving around connection. Communities are taking over. People crave interaction, and the internet is built around that.

The best way to learn is by doing. That’s why I’m launching Learn in Public —a project where I’ll share my learning journey through a blog-newsletter, and short-form content, with the goal of documenting my journey and inspiring others to start writing about their own learning experiences.

So, what exactly am I writing about? The topics I’m currently exploring include writing, presentations, science communication, and bioinformatics. This specific combination is a product of my formal education and my passions.

I recently completed a degree in Biotechnology Engineering—only to realize it wasn’t truly what I wanted to do (but that’s a story for another time). In trying to bridge my academic background with my passions, I discovered writing as the perfect bridge between them. And here I have a little advantage: writing isn’t new to me.

I’ve journaled for eight years, and it still amazes me how much it clarifies my thoughts. Writing is powerful—not just for the reader, but even more so for the writer. It allows us to structure ideas in a way that our minds alone cannot. We take a complex, multi-dimensional thought process and translate it into a linear, word-by-word format.

I’ve experimented with different forms of writing—essays, posts on X, YouTube scripts, blogs, and newsletters—but I always struggled with the feeling that I wasn’t adding real value. Then I realized my big mistake: I tried to teach before I had learned.

Instead of trying a fake it ‘till you make it approach, it’s better to embrace the the place you’re in and learn openly, sharing the process. That’s what this project is about: documenting the journey.

If this resonates with you, feel free to start your own Learn in Public journey.

Thank you for reading—have a great week!
